Private Guided City Walk in Stockholm – Gamla Stan, Riddarholmen and City Hall
A private guided city walk from Gamla Stan to Kungsholmen where Stockholm's historical development is traced through urban environments and concludes with...
The Experience
This private guided city walk in Stockholm begins in Gamla Stan at Stortorget, the city's oldest square. Here you will meet your authorized Stockholm guide, who is also an authorized City Hall guide, and receive an introduction to how Stockholm grew between the islands and how Gamla Stan developed into the city's political and economic center.
The walk continues through Gamla Stan's medieval street network. Narrow alleys, historic buildings and squares show the city's early structure and development. During the stroll you will pass the Royal Palace and several central locations where the city's royal and administrative functions are placed in clear context.
The tour continues to Riddarholmen, where the urban environment changes. Here views open up over Lake Mälaren and Stockholm's skyline, while the area's historical significance is explained, focusing on Riddarholmskyrkan and the site's role in Swedish history.
The tour then continues to Kungsholmen and Stockholm City Hall, located by the water. Here the guiding continues with focus on the building's architecture, symbolism and role in 20th-century urban development, as well as its connection to the Nobel Banquet and the city's international context.
After the guided tour there is an opportunity to move freely in the City Hall courtyard outside the building, with views over Lake Mälaren and the city's waterscape. The experience concludes here.
During the walk you will pass the Royal Palace and several of Gamla Stan's historic streets before the stroll continues toward Riddarholmen. Here you will encounter a peaceful and solemn Stockholm with views over Lake Mälaren and the city's skyline, while the guide tells about Riddarholmskyrkan and the area's role in Swedish history.
The tour then continues to Kungsholmen where Stockholm City Hall rises by the water. On site you will be taken care of by an authorized City Hall guide for an in-depth tour that places the building's architecture, symbolism and 20th-century urban development in context – including the story of the Nobel Banquet and how the City Hall became one of Sweden's strongest national icons.
After the tour there is an opportunity to stay and continue the experience at your own pace in the parts that are open to visitors, depending on current opening hours and any events in the building.
